Introduction to the Department:

In the Drama Department we believe in developing students understanding and passion in their dramatic CRAFT. This means developing their Creativity, Respect, Awareness, Focus and Teamwork. We are continually developing the students’ critical thinking skills and evaluation of themselves and others.  We endeavour to help make the transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible building on prior learning or allowing those who have and haven’t had much experience of Drama to make progress as confident and self-reflective individuals. We hope to encourage students to explore various aspects of performance and theatre, appreciating the art form and developing a range of skills along the way.

Key Stage 3 Information:

In Key Stage 3 we are constantly developing our curriculum to make it dynamic and relevant to the students we teach. It is important that students are not only gaining a great understanding of the broad and fascinating history of Theatre and its vast number of styles and genres that can be explored. It is also important that students are developing as independent, reflective and confident learners within our classrooms. All KS3 students will have an awareness and knowledge of technical elements such as lighting, costume and sound within their performance work.

Year 7 outline:

In year 7 we are building the foundations of our student’s knowledge. They are constantly developing their drama ‘tool kit’.  Therefore as they progress through the year they are able to use a range of techniques confidently and appropriately within their work, developing their own interpretations and style. They will have the chance to explore published work and devise their own pieces,

dNOTE: The above is a general outline of the KS3 Drama Curriculum, subject to change.

Year 8 Outline:

This year we aim to develop students’ knowledge of technical elements, various genres and acting styles whilst looking at the ‘whole’ performance.

Students are able to choose Drama as an option subject at the end of this year therefore it is imperative that they continue to develop their ability to use their ‘key skills’ both practically and in their written work.

This year the students are learning to:

  • Develop their performance skills including planning, acting and reflection
  • Explore the performance space and technical elements
  • Explore different genre and styles of theatre

In both year groups, students develop their literacy skills, each unit of work students complete various extended writing tasks such as self and peer evaluations, writing in role and analysis of performance aspects. These can be found in specially design Drama Progress Booklets.

Key Stage 4 Information:

In KS4 we are continually developing the curriculum to allow students to enhance their knowledge and ability to create engaging and thought provoking pieces of theatre.

We study a range of areas throughout the 3 years, ranging from basic knowledge of the theatre and the roles and responsibilities of theatre makers, devised performances, practitioner work, scripted work and various technical elements.

Students are expected to study and practically explore a whole set text, they are also taught the tools to create their own pieces of theatre from a range of different stimuli. 

We cover areas such as: War, Monologues, Blood Brothers by Willy Russell, The Crucible by Arthur Miller and various other texts/ extracts. Our devised theatre themes allow students to fully explore a range of skills and storyline possibilities for example; Memories, Lost Voices, Physical Theatre and the study of key drama practitioners including Stanislavski, Artaud and Brecht to name but a few of our topics.

We aim to broaden students’ knowledge even further with the study of key dramatic practitioners and their works and how they have influenced the style of performance they are creating.

It is also important to mention that we develop our written reflective skills within KS4 Drama. As part of the course, students need to complete a log book about the progress of their practical work. We also include performance reviews and textual study work. With the updated specification the written review of student’s work is an integral part of the course.

Students will need to commit to rehearsal time that takes place outside of classwork, this is integral to developing high quality performance work ready for exam performances.

We also visit the theatre for pleasure and as an essential part of the GCSE course to help assist our performance making and reflective audience member skills.

Examination Board used:

We follow the AQA exam board a new updated specification which is as follows:

Component 1: Understanding Drama - 40%

The students are assessed on their knowledge and understanding of theatre and theatre maker’s roles and responsibilities and various staging configurations, the study of 1 set text and analysis of a live piece of theatre.

This is assessed at the end of year 11

1 hour 45 minute written exam.

Component 2: Devising Drama – Practical Unit 80 marks – 40%

Students are assessed on the process of creating drama, performance of their devised pieces and analysis of their work. They will have to produce a written/ recorded ‘Drama Log’ worth 60 marks as well as the performance, which is worth 20 marks

This component is marked by teachers and moderated by AQA.

Component 3: Texts in Practice – Practical Unit 2 extracts from 1 play are performed each worth 20 marks – 20%

Students are assessed on the performance of 2 extracts from 1 play. The play must contrast to the set text studied in component 1.

This is marked by an external AQA examiner.

Other Information eg club/trips:

There will be a school production every year, as well as drama clubs to get involved with. We strongly believe in the importance of seeing live theatre as an inspirational tool for performance work and a great way to develop reflective and evaluating skills.
